FAQ
MEK'NOIDS™ is a card-based science fiction game featuring battling robots. The game is centred around trading cards. The game can be scaled for two or multiple players, and for short or long play. It is good for short school or work breaks or long nights of game play and arguing over coalition building and treachery. We also plan for a tournament edition where players compete for chips in winner take all matches. Until then, the tournament rules allow for use of standard poker chips.
What is the difference between MEK'NOIDS and other trading card based games?
In MEK'NOIDS, players build their robots using cards. The build budget is adaptable, allowing for both short and longer games, as well as tournaments. One key feature is that the game involves simultaneous moves by all players. As it is also a last robot standing game, there is scope for rapid coalition building as weaker players try to gang up on stronger ones. This adds an element of negotiation to the game between simultaneous moves (sort of like the classic game Diplomacy). From test play, such coalitions can also fall apart quickly as the situation changes. After all, at the end, it is every robot for himself.
How long does it take to play a game?
This depends on the points allocated to the MEK'NOIDS, and the number of players. For quicker matches, limit the number of build points. For longer matches and tournaments, you can use a larger budget. This means you can play a quick 15 minute game, or play one that lasts for hours. You can also plan on tournament play (see below).
What is the difference between the "Classic" and "Friends & Family" Version?
The Classic deck consists of 108 cards, and is intended for 2-4 players. The Friends & Family deck contains 216 cards; it is literally twice as many of the same decks, which makes it well suited for 6+ players.
Does the game support Battle Royale?
MEK'NOIDS is a last man standing game. However, at this stage we have not developed an online Battle Royale version. Rather it is played in person, using trading cards. There is scope for moving the Mek'verse online to allow for massive elimination play... but we are not there yet.
The game does allow for tournament play, with the winner of sole survivor elimination rounds proceeding to the next level. For the tournament version, the rules allow for buying into the tournament with poker chips. The final winner takes all. We imagine tournaments as being more suitable for event halls and casinos (or at home), but again in future we could move this online.
What are the different card types in MEK'NOIDS?
Robots are built around a robot frame. Cards represent augmentations added to the basic MEK'NOIDS™ frame. These include mechanical weapons, energy weapons, hybrid weapons, and alien devices. In addition, you can add armour to protect your robot from mechanical damage, and energy shields to protect from energy damage. Alien devices include the the vortex generator, which changes the terrain for the next round of MEK'NOID™ combat. You build your robot using a point budget, where points are used to buy the various cards needed to augment your robot frame. Some cards are more common than others, and future releases will include new rare cards.
